Neuropsychological Evaluations

Our specialty is neuropsychological evaluations with children, adolescents, and adults. We perform testing for the diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities, attention disorders, neuro-developmental disorders, traumatic brain injuries, autism spectrum disorders, and social and emotional issues and traumas.

What Can I Expect in a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation includes an initial interview, direct observation of the individual, and face-to-face testing. Testing involves paper-and-pencil tests, hands-on activities, as well as I-Pad and computer based tests. Parents and/or the patient will be asked to complete questionnaires regarding the development, symptoms, behavior, social, and emotional functioning.

Individuals may work with more than one clinician throughout the testing.

Who needs a neuropsychological evaluation?

An individual who is experiencing changes or difficulties in thinking, problem solving, attention, memory, school performance, or emotional/behavioral functioning.

What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluations assess brain functioning by evaluating intellect, academic achievement, attention, executive function (i.e., organization, planning), memory, language, visual-perceptual skills, motor speed/coordination, sensory processing, behavioral, social, emotional, and personality.

What do Neuropsychological Evaluations provide?

  • Diagnostic Clarification
  • Treatment Planning
  • School Planning
  • Medication Management
  • Strengths and areas needing further development

How long are the evaluations?

A deductive approach is used for each individual in order to customize the testing based on presenting issues. Typically, a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment requires 6-8 hours of testing, broken into 2-3 hour segments. Additional hours are spent scoring, interpreting, and producing an extensive written report detailing the results, diagnoses, and recommendations.

What should I tell my child about the evaluation?

Many parents find it helpful to tell their child that this testing helps determine how they learn best. It is also helpful to remind them that no one gets every question right and the most important thing is to try their best. Remember - no shots are involved!
